If you have ever been to or seen pictures of Hilton Head, you are more likely to think of the beautiful beaches, massive homes on the beach, and even thinking about going there for your next family vacation. On an island of 34,000 residents and 2.5 million tourists every year, it is hard to imagine that it has homes that are falling apart.

There is a population of people that many wouldn’t realize live on the island.  They are called the Gullah people. These people are African Americans that lived in South Carolina and moved to the island once slavery was abolished.

Most of the Gullah population has very little education which means that it is very hard to get jobs to support their family.  They live in trailer homes that are falling apart because they have no means to fixing them up.  But what is ironic about this entire situation is that the land they live on is worth a lot of money.

These people are trapped.  They could make some money by selling their land and moving to a new place in hope to find a job so they can support their family or they can continue to live on their inheritance (the land given by the government to them) and stay in poverty. Either way, they are more in likely going to be in poverty.  By selling their land, they may be out of poverty for a little bit but with very little education it is going to be hard to find a job.

Even though this group lives in poverty, it doesn’t mean that God has forgotten them. God is moving on this island and He is revealing Himself to the wealthy, the poor, and everyone in between.  It is exciting to see what God is doing every day.
